I get what you're saying but if you keep trash students you'll waste resources. So in a sense, it's best to have a small set of excellent students as opposed to a bunch of ok students. Besides technically killed by comrades or killed by enemies you're still eventually be killed if you feel me

Not exactly. You will see later on, Tan Yun is cleaning up the sect. They are not exactly making it clear right now, but there are many who are not loyal to the sect but instead to outside forces, other sects, warring factions, noble families that rule huge empires etc. In order for the sect to prosper it must be united first. It will take a bit of doing, but eventually Tan Yun will unite the entire sect as chief disciple. And at that time there won't be all of these warring factions within the sect. You will have loyalty to the sect or die. Then they will not be killing each other. But it will take a LOT of blood before this happens.
